Journal Entry Week 7: “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People” This week we studied excerpts from one of my all-time favorite books! I will share the highlights: The 7 Habits: 1-        Be proactive: To actively choose what our response will be in any situation rather than to react blindly. ·         “Each person has the ability to be either reactive or proactive in every situation that arises. This is the true meaning of ‘response-ability’ – the ability to choose our own response. Proactive people are highly responsible…Proactivity means to subordinate impulses to values. Reactive people are swept away by the heat of the moment. Proactive people are driven by values that are both well thought out and internalized.” 2-        Begin with the end in mind: using an image or paradigm of your character at the end of your life as a frame of reference or criterion by which everything is examined. ·         “It’s easy to get so caught up in climbing the ladder of success tha

JOURNAL ENTRY: How to Be Successful “How Entrepreneurs Craft Strategies That Work” by Amar Bhide             I have an entrepreneur’s spirit with the courage of a rabbit. I have tons of business ideas pop into my head all the time and it’s hard to focus on any one of them for long. And the more time I spend thinking about them, the more they grow out of all proportion and seem impossible to manage. Sometimes I wish I could just strike while the iron’s hot, forget all the preliminary planning, and just take a leap of faith. I often wonder how entrepreneurs find that one business that will work for them, and how they land in the right place, at the right time, with the right amount of money.             I really appreciated this article by Amar Bhide for Harvard Business School. In it, he said, “…all ventures merit some analysis and planning. Appearances to the contrary, successful entrepreneurs don’t take risks blindly. Rather, they use a quick, cheap approach that represents a

A Hero's Journey

Journal Entry Week 5: A Hero’s Journey             This week was really motivational and inspiring. We read four chapters in “Mastery,” by George Leonard, an article by James E. Faust titled, “Perseverance,” and another from the ACTON Foundation titled, “Are Successful Entrepreneurs Born or Made?” We also watched some really inspiring videos that made me very excited for the future. Some of the content that had the greatest impact on me are as follows: “Mastery”             We were introduced to three different paths, or styles, that people often have/take when it comes to mastery: ·          The Dabbler: Enjoys the initial thrill of starting something but rationalizes and quits when things start to get tough. ·          The Obsessive: Pushes himself to the extreme to perfect his talents, skills, career, and relationships. When things begin to get tough or cool down, he pushes harder to maintain or increase the high of the original conquest. Watch out for th

Deconstructing My Fears: Have Faith

Journal Entry: Conquering Fear             I am a hard worker with a lot of good ideas and a sincere concern for others and the world around me. If I do all in my power to succeed in my business ventures, I feel that the Lord will lead and guide me along, helping me to prosper. I feel a sense of excitement as I think about the future and all the opportunities it holds. The closer I get to graduating, the more my fear diminishes. Becoming educated has given me greater self-esteem and self-confidence. Life experience is great, but it is hard to convince others that you are worth the risk or you know what you are talking about when you don’t have a degree. I think I can be very successful if I employ this success formula. It is very unlikely that my fears will materialize.             As I look at my fears, I know exactly where they come from: my father owned a business for about twenty years. It was his baby and he loved going to work each day. He was very successful for a few year
